A Patron is a deity which takes the form of a large metallic golem. Each team’s base houses a Patron, and victory is secured by defeating the opposing team's Patron, completing the ritual. The Patrons' avatars are spherical, with a golden, mask-like face, and can magically levitate above the ground. During gameplay, the Patrons will comment on player performance, announce any major events, and offer boons that allow players to level up.

The two Patrons are the Amber Hand and the Sapphire Flame.

Overview[edit | edit source]

Patrons are formidable units that are found hovering around in each team's base. When an opposing Hero or Trooper walks within its range, the Patron will unleash a beam of energy at them, dealing very large damage over time. The beam itself is slow moving, and does not lock onto targets unlike the Walker and Guardian beams, which makes it fairly easy to avoid in the right circumstances.

While naturally immune to damage, a Patron can be made vulnerable by destroying the two Shrines located within its base. After they've been destroyed, the Patron's attack will become stronger but also allow it to take damage. After successfully depleting its health bar fully, the Patron will enter a second phase; becoming invulnerable again and moving into a small pit within the base over 16 seconds. Once it has finished travelling, it will become vulnerable again, now a Weakened Patron.

The Patrons are currently the only structures that will slowly regenerate health over time after not being damaged for a brief period. They are also protected by backdoor protection, which increases their health regeneration further when no enemy Troopers are nearby.

Defeating the Patron's first phase does not award any immediate Souls. However, it will release 13 Soul Orbs that add up to 500 Souls total.

Weakened Patron[edit | edit source]

In its second phase, the Patron will enter its Weakened form, losing its limbs and hovering inside the pit of its team's base. In this weakened state, the Patron has an effect similar to Torment Pulse and damages Troopers and Heroes around it. Similar to Mid Boss, the Patron is also immune to all incoming damage from outside the pit, forcing players to get in close if they want to damage it.

Lore[edit | edit source]

The Patrons are extraplanar[1] gods[2][3] who petition heroes to participate in a ritual. Each Patron must form a covenant with 6 Heroes in hopes of being summoned to walk amongst them.[4] In order for the ritual to be completed, the enemy Patron must be destroyed.

Once the ritual is completed, the Patrons can grant one wish to each hero who helped summon them.[5] However, they have limitations, such as being unable to bring Grey Talon's deceased family back to life.[6] They also may require a sacrifice in exchange for the wish. The specifics of the Patron's powers and their limitations are unclear.

The Patrons have telepathic powers and can read the thoughts and desires of the heroes (with the exception of Warden[7][8]), as well as communicate with them during the ritual. They use this knowledge to manipulate the heroes to do their bidding.

This is the first time in history that humanity has been able to make contact with the Patrons.[9] Such rituals used to be impossible, as well as forbidden, before the second Maelstrom.[10] The orders of the Amber Hand and the Sapphire Flame were supposed to safeguard humanity from the Patrons, but recently have changed their objectives.[1]

A Patron looming over humans

There are other Patrons besides the Amber Hand and the Sapphire Flame, but they haven't yet made contact with humanity.[11]

The Binding of Oathkeeper's multiple endings shows potential wishes granted by the Patrons:

  • An answer to one of Abrams' questions regarding the Tome;
  • Binding Oathkeeper back to the Tome and allowing Lady Geist to stay young;
  • The sacrifice of Johann Jr. in exchange for 200 years of Oathkeeper's complete obedience to Lady Geist;
  • The self-sacrifice of Lady Geist in exchange for banishing Oathkeeper from Earth;
  • Safely removing Oathkeeper from Geist, but making her return to the natural age she had before their pact.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Weakened Patrons drop 250 Souls upon death, despite the player never being able to spend them.
  • In Neon Prime, the Patron was called Titan, and the Weakened Patron was the Core. The Patrons are still called "Titans" in the game files.
  • The text across the Patron's crest reads
    The Patron's crest
